baking with love
For over 156 Years
McMasters heritage dates back to the days of early settlement in Australia. When Thomas McMaster took the risk to bring his family all the way from Scotland to the new world colony of Sydney in 1839, he probably had no idea what he was heading into or the legacy that he would leave. After first settling in the rough and tumble colony of Sydney he quickly realised that this wasn’t the place for him and his young family.
It wasn’t long before he saw opportunities in the newer settlement of Victoria and by 1842 Thomas moved his family there, eventually settling the small bustling Victorian town of Beechworth establishing the towns first bakery.
By 1866, Thomas’ eldest daughter Mary McMaster and her pastry chef husband David Dunlop joined the rest of the McMaster clan in Beechworth after an encounter with an intruder in their Collins Street tea rooms that saw Mary bravely confront and capture the would be thief.
Once in Beechworth, they soon established the Scotch Pie Shop at the site now known as the Beechworth Bakery.
Being the home town of the Kelly Gangs’ Joe Byrne and Aaron Sherritt, their pie shop was regularly frequented by Ned Kelly and his merry gang of bushrangers.
So much for moving to the country for a quieter life!
Just like Ned Kelly, it wasn’t long before their pies and pastries became legendary Australia wide
